The Perfume of the Lady in Black is a 1908 mystery novel by the French writer Gaston Leroux, first published in the United States by Brentano’s of NYNY in 1909. It is the second in the series of books featuring the fictional detective Joseph Rouletabille, preceded by The Mystery of the Yellow Room.
The story revolves around the aftermath of a wedding between Robert Darzac and Mathilde Stangerson, which took place in a shadowy, foreboding church. The protagonist, Joseph Rouletabille, is a young and clever reporter, plays a pivotal role in unraveling the mystery surrounding the couple's past and a lurking threat that could disrupt their newfound happiness.
It has been adapted for film four times, the first time in 1914 and the last in 2005.
