THE NOBLE ROGUE

$13.00
THE NOBLE ROGUE by BARONESS ORCZY is a historical adventure romance set in 17th century France. It was first published in Great Britain as FIRE IN STUBBLE by METHEUN in 1912 and under the title THE NOBLE ROGUE for its United Sates publication by the GEORGE M. DORAN company that same year. Against the backdrop of the reign of Louis XIV, the story revolves around the life of Rose Marie Legros, the beautiful and virtuous daughter of a wealthy tailor. The narrative explores themes of love, marriage, and social ambition, especially as it pertains to Rose Marie's eventual fate tied to her long-ago betrothal to the now-wealthy Earl of Stowmaries. As an infant Rose was espoused to Rupert Keyston, a mere child himself at the time. Over the years Rupert's position has changed from one of poverty and obscurity to one of wealth, and he now holds the honorable position of the Earl of Stowmaries. Rupert has not seen his child-bride since his espousals, and on reaching manhood conceives a dastardly plot to free himself from the unwanted union by persuading his cousin Michael to impersonate him when he is finally called upon to ratify his engagement and claim his bride. Once this has happened, he fully intends to get his marriage annulled, on the grounds of his wife's unfaithfulness with his cousin.
