HERITAGE OF THE DESERT: A NOVEL by American writer and dentist, ZANE GREY was first published in 1910 by HARPER AND BROTHERS. The novel was Grey’s first commercial success and was adapted for film three times. The first was a silent film in 1924 directed by Irvin Willit. The second was in 1932 and directed by Henry Hathaway and the third was a 1939 film directed by Lesley Selander. All three tell the story about a rancher, a greenhorn, a conflict over land, and a love story involving the rancher’s adopted daughter. Jack Hare is a sick Easterner rescued by Mormon rancher August Naab. While recovering, Hare falls for Mescal, Naab's ward, leading to a love triangle and conflict with a local outlaw gang and Naab's son Snap. The novel is a classic Western with themes of forbidden love, land disputes, and a battle between good and evil, notable for its vivid descriptions of the Utah desert landscape.
