THE LOST WORLD AND OTHER STORIES

$15.00
This Campbell Classic edition, THE LOST WORLD AND OTHER STORIES, is dedicated to Jimmie C. (Jim) Goodwin and collects the five PROFESSOR CHALLENGER stories written by SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE THE LOST WORLD is an adventure and science fiction novel by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle recounting an expedition to a remote plateau in the Amazon basin of South America where dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals still survive, along with a tribe of vicious ape-like creatures that are in conflict with a group of indigenous Indians. The work introduces the character of Professor Challenger, who leads the expedition (and who would appear in later Conan Doyle stories), and is narrated in the first person by the journalist member (Edward Malone) of the exploration party. The Lost World appeared in serial form in the Strand Magazine, illustrated by New-Zealand-born artist Harry Rountree, during the months of April through November 1912 and also was serialized in magazines in the United States from March to November 1912. Hodder & Stoughton published the first book edition in October 1912 in Great Britain (London), with printings as well in the United States (New York) and in Canada. THE POISON BELT is a science fiction novel by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle, the second book about Professor Challenger. Written in 1913, much of it takes place in a single room in Challenger's house in Sussex. This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to influence his writing. The first edition was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1913. THE LAND OF MIST is a novel published in 1926. Although this is a Professor Challenger story, it centres more on his daughter Enid and his old friend Edward Malone who later marry. Another friend from the 1912 novel The Lost World, Lord John Roxton, is also involved in the novel's second half. Professor Summerlee, who has died of old age around this time, is referred to by the mediums. The first edition was published by Hutchinson& Co in 1926. WHEN THE WORLD SCREAMED is a science fiction short story featuring Professor Challenger. It was first published in Liberty magazine, in February and March 1928. It is the fourth Professor Challenger story and retains only Challenger and Malone from the first novel. THE DISINTEGRATION MACHINE was first published in The Strand Magazine in January 1929.
