MISTRESS WILDING, a historical novel of adventure and romance by British writer, RAFAEL SABATINI, was originally published as ARMS AND THE MAID in 1910, and republished in the United States in1924 by Houghton Mifflin after the success of Captain Blood (which was a break out hit in 1922). In the days just before England’s Monmouth Rebellion, Anthony Wilding takes advantage of an insult to force a marriage with the woman he loves. The novel begins just before the Monmouth Rebellion, with Anthony Wilding already deeply in love with the strong-willed Ruth Westmacott. However, Ruth despises Wilding's reputation as a gambler and rake and has rejected his advances. Wilding contrives a plan to win Ruth by provoking a duel with her reckless and drunken brother, Richard Westmacott. When Richard's life is in Wilding's hands, a desperate Ruth agrees to marry Wilding to save her brother's life and her family's honor. Wilding, a supporter of the Duke of Monmouth's Protestant rebellion against King James II, leaves his new bride shortly after the wedding to join the doomed campaign.
